Polo

A normal progression for our boy after riding horses for four years was to play Polo. This school year, León’s dream has come true. After being one of very few boys in the Stables, he can now unite his passion for goals and horses. This ancient Persian sport dates back as far as the 6th century BC. Modern polo originated in India and its name is derived from ‘pulu’ referring to the ball made of wood that was used in the 19th century.  The modern ball is made of hard plastic and it actually changes shape slowly while being hit by the player with the mallet.
At the Indaba Club, where León plays and takes lessons, they are lucky to play outdoor polo, space not being an issue in South Africa. And as most equestrian disciplines it’s a unisex team sport at professional level.
